Top Plants to Maximise Your Small Space:

Got a balcony or small courtyard? It's the perfect opportunity to create your own green retreat. But before you go wild with pots and flowering herbs, a few smart choices will save you time, money and hassle.
Start with the Right Pots
Small pots dry out fast and tip over easily. Opt for fewer, larger pots—they'll keep your plants happier and give you more time to relax, not water. You'll be surprised how an oversized pot can actually make the space feel larger and more intentional.
What to Grow
If you're not into constant pruning or replanting, choose slow-growing trees, shrubs, and perennials. Acer 'Beni Hime' is a compact Japanese maple with seasonal colour, perfect with the soft, architectural Pseudopanax 'Cyril Watson.
Sunny Spots
Have a sunny balcony? Aloe polyphylla (Spiral Aloe) is a sculptural standout. Or any other cluster of mini aloes look amazing and are so easy they practically raise themselves. Team it with Senecio serpens (Chalk Sticks) for low-fuss drama. Want lush? Go for a Strelitzia (Bird of Paradise) or our striking native Xeronema callistemon (Poor Knights Lily).
Partial Shade
Not full sun? probably even easier. Try any of the large leaf philodendrons for form, or Chamaerops humilis (Dwarf Fan Palm) for tropical texture.
Fill the Gaps
Dichondra 'Silver Falls' spills beautifully from pots. Any of our ferns and Begonias bring height and texture without the upkeep.
You don't have to fill it all at once - build your space slowly with plants that'll stick around. Start with solid foundations, and add character over time.
